Where to drink away the pain—plus, El Dorado’s new drink menu

There was plenty to be frustrated about last week after the primary election. Voter turnout was pathetic, and some good people were sent packing. I asked a few of the folks who put their heart, soul, shoe leather and brain power into losing campaigns where they’d go to dull the pain and what they’d order.

Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, president of San Diego Blue Dog Democrats and Nathan Fletcher supporter: “I would likely have a Black Lemonade at Urban Mo’s, symbolic of the dark days ahead under a potential Carl DeMaio mayorship.”

Livia Borak, environmental attorney and supporter of Mat Kostrinsky and Denise Ducheny: “I’d go to Aussie Pub in Pacific Beach and order a Victoria Bitter, because the name matches my mood about Mat Kostrinsky. If I stay local in my Encinitas ’hood, I’d wander on over to 1st Street (my favorite bar) and order shots of tequila until I forgot that so many people voted for a birther named Kreep to be a judge. While I’m at it, might as well order an Adios Motherf*$&er in honor of [Juan] Vargas—the fireworks-lover / [California Environmental Quality Act]-hater—beating Denise Ducheny.”

Omar Passons, attorney and Nathan Fletcher supporter: “I’d order the Coltrane, off-menu, at West Coast Tavern. It’s a very good bourbon drink. I’d order it because it takes me to some past era, and the historic decor helps. Second in line is the Dark & Stormy at Station Tavern in South Park.”




Sometimes El Dorado’s reputation as a nightlife spot edges out its origins as a craft-cocktail bar, but each season, it issues a reminder in the form of a new cocktail menu full of simple, elegant drinks. On Tuesday, June 19, El-D will host a party to introduce its summer cocktails. Starting at 9 p.m., drinks are on special for $5. New cocktails include the Going Back to Mezcali (mezcal, reposado tequila, honey, orange bitters), Your Tai (aged rum, white rum, lime, orgeat syrup, Curacao, Tiki Bitters), and Peaches for Me (peach-infused rye whiskey, lemon, ginger, soda).
