Nena Anderson brings icy-cool jazz to the Lafayette

Booty Bassment and Mad Men viewing parties to round out your weekend

By Alex Zaragoza
hitlist Nena Anderson

June gloom may be preventing you from going full summer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun while the sky makes mild threats against your tube tops and jorts.

Grab a cardigan and head out to the Lafayette Hotel (2223 El Cajon Blvd. in North Park) for cocktails and good vibes. After a major renovation, the hotel has ratcheted up the weekends with pool parties and live entertainment. From 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 8, Nena Anderson will be laying down her jazzy, throwback stylings on the veranda. It’s the perfect way to sit on your rump and unwind from the workweek.

Speaking of rumps, life’s been tough since Booty Bassment, the bimonthly Saturday-night rap party at the Whistle Stop (2236 Fern St. in South Park), has become bigger than the bikinied butts that adorn its flyers. Now you have to stand in a line that wraps around the block before DJ Dimitri Dickinson has you working up a sweat in places you didn’t know existed. For those who want to give something else a try, U-31 (3112 University Ave. in North Park) has the Generations Party, a night of bangin’ hip-hop and club anthems from the ’80s to the ’00s. DJs Artistic, Felt1, Mr. Hek and Cros1 will be armed with their records and an iTunes library full of jams on Thursday, June 7. If you still crave the original, Booty Bassment goes down Saturday, June 9. Both charge a $5 cover.

Finish out your weekend at The Office (3936 30th St. in North Park) on Sunday for a Mad Men viewing party. It’s the season finale, so hardcore fans can drown their sorrows while sending-off Don, Peggy and “Zou Bisou Bisou” with cocktails inspired by the show’s characters. Hopefully we won’t have to wait another year to be reunited with them, though it may take that long to get that catchy tune out of our heads. “Zou Bisou Bisouuu…”
