Shenanigans: Calculating Carl

Can you calculate the growth of the mayoral candidate's head?

By Dave Maass
demaiohead
In the spirit of this week's education-related cover story, we present this math problem about Carl DeMaio, who's running for mayor of San Diego.

1a. DeMaio's head is growing at a rate of one inch in circumference per day. If his head is a foot wide from ear to ear on the day of the June 5 primary election, and he wins enough votes to advance, approximately how big around will DeMaio's head be by the time of the Nov. 6 general election?

1b. If DeMaio wins the general election, the radius of his head will double in length every week. How long until DeMaio’s head is bigger than the Earth (radius: 20.9 millionfeet)?
