Wang's grand opening, plus DJs at La Mezcalera and El Dorado

Good times for the Chinese New Year

So far, Wang’s North Park (3029 University Ave.) has kept as low a profile as a big new restaurant and bar with a somewhat amusing sexual innuendo for a theme could possibly manage. The grand-opening party puts an end to that with a lineup of we-have-arrived-andare-ready-for-you-to-take-notice entertainment including a drag-queen geisha (San Diego’s own Babette Schwartz) and red-carpet photo opps.

The Chinese New Year-themed soirée, happening from 6 p.m. to close on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28, also promises all-night happy-hour prices on signature drinks, free appetizers and a ceremonial performance by San Diego Lucky Lion Dancers. If all goes according to plan, Wang’s North Park could eventually become more like its more raucous sister in Palm Springs, which is as much about the pre-party dinner as it is about the after-dinner party.

Here are two more fancy fetes for your moonlit hours:

Third Anniversary @ La Mezcalera (8267 Calle Sexta, Tijuana): When this cute little mescal-serving bar and club opened in January 2009, it lifted the floodgates to Tijuanenses’ reclamation of downtown. Within months, other bars and clubs opened on Calle Sexta, and, these days, it’s the busiest street in TJ as soon as the sun goes down. Celebrate the bar’s anniversary with DJ sets by Saul Q, Office Twins, WERO and others from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27.

Soul Flexin’ @ El Dorado Cocktail Lounge (1030 Broadway, Downtown): Brooklyn turntabalist DJ Total Eclipse will be the special guest at this month’s Soul Flexin’ night of classic hip-hop and soul breaks. Eclipse is a familiar face in the national DJ-battle circuit and an original member of the famed X-Ecutioners collective. Local DJs Grandmasta Rats and Question will spin, too. Music starts at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. $7.
