These are the things I'd do

Got plans? Now you do

WEDNESDAY

PLAN A: Psychic TV @ The Casbah. PTV was the 1980s brainchild of London performance artist and multimedia punk Genesis P-Orrige. They essentially mixed electronic, punk and industrial music with an androgynous live show--which was based on a series of avant-garde videos (thus the "TV" in the name). The newest lineup--PTV3--just recorded their first album in 10 years (with Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner and Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes). They're proof that "live spectacle" doesn't always mean "shitty music." MS/ptv3. PLAN B: Kensington Garage, Robin Henkel @ Lestat's. Kensington Garage is a great new addition to the jazz scene. A casual waltz through N'Awlins sax-jazz and some soulful, Coltrane-ish material. Henkel is one of San Diego's best guitarists--blues or jazz. MS/kensingtongarage, MS/robinhenkel. PLAN C: The Creepshow, Viva Hate @ Jumping Turtle. Good show for psychobilly fans. Creepshow is a female-led Canadian outfit along the lines of Horrorpops. Viva Hate is the hardcore-meets-psychobilly project of stand-up bass assaulter Geoff Kresge, formerly of every band (Tiger Army, Horrorpops, AFI). BACKUP PLAN: Pocket @ Winston's (MS/pocketsandiego).

THURSDAY

PLAN A: Randy Travis @ Viejas. Randy Travis is country. A former jail-bound kid from North Carolina who was a short-order cook at the bar he gigged at and then became an international superstar on the strength of his old-school, no-frills country songs (à la Hank and Merle). He even dedicated a buncha songs to Jesus. And that voice--dude has it all. www.randytravis.com. PLAN B: "The Visual Underground" w/ Silverbird @ The Casbah. The monthly TVU is a good indie cinema, art and music show--this month with former punks gone country, Silverbird. MS/thevisualunderground, MS/silver birdmusic. PLAN C: Eulogies @ Beauty Bar. It's hard to know if you're going because the bombastically somber rock songs of L.A. trio Eulogies are good--or because they're the newest signees to Dangerbird Records (Silversun Pickups, Dappled Cities). MS/eulogiesmusic. BACKUP PLAN: Superunloader, DB3 @ Winston's (MS/superunloader, MS/db3funk).

FRIDAY

PLAN A: Barrington Levy @ House of Blues. If you're just getting into the pubescently challenged Mr. Sean Kingston, time to see the vocal tradition he comes from. Levy was one of dancehall's first superstars, and even today--on hits like "Shine Eye Gal" and, yes, even "Bad Boyz"--his voice is one of the world's sweetest things. MS/barringtonlevy. PLAN B: The Sess, The Atoms @ Che Café. We've written about these two San Diego bands so many times that all we have new to say is they both have new albums--go see them, please. MS/theses, MS/atoms. PLAN C: Crash Encore, Get Back Loretta, Silent Comedy, Southern Graffiti @ The Casbah. Another good all-local bill and a CD-release for alt-country upstarts Southern Graffiti. MS/crashencore, MS/getbackloretta, MS/thesilentcomedy, MS/southern graffiti. BACKUP PLAN: Thee Corsairs, The Mission Creeps @ The Zombie Lounge (MS/theecor sairs, MS/themissioncreeps).

SATURDAY

PLAN A: Vitro, The Vultures, The Widows @ Tower Bar. A mangy little rock dive is the perfect place to see three of San Diego's best. Watch out for Vitro--a deadly good mix of The Dirtbombs and The Black Keys. The Vultures are some snot-nosed rock with a vocalist who's almost sure to talk shit to someone in the front row, and The Widows are some quality garage rock featuring Max Bristol--owner of Flapping Jet Records. MS/vitromusic, MS/offi cialvultures, MS/thewidowssandiego. PLAN B: Dynamite Walls @ Belly Up. It's the CD-release party for the good, mainstream rock band from San Diego. All falsettos and huge, dramatic hooks. MS/dynamitewalls. PLAN C: 8-Bit @ Beauty Bar. Novelty show--but a good one. Some L.A. dudes (and lady) in radiation suits rapping about scenesters, blowjobs and, er, crumpets. MS/8bit. BACKUP PLAN: The Chromatics @ Bar Pink Elephant (MS/chrom aticsmusics).

SUNDAY

PLAN A: M-Theory Records @ Mission Hills. Go in there, sift through their vinyl, talk to the dude with the mohawk (he owns the place), buy some stuff. See if they've got the new Ezra Furman album or the new Ryan Ferguson joint. If they don't, head to Lou's Records in Encinitas--the holy ground. www.mtheory music.com, www.lousrecords.com.

MONDAY

PLAN A: Okkervil River, Damien Jurado @ The Casbah. An indie-rock lover's delight. Austin's Okkervil River is a caterwauling force, with frontman Will Scheff's penchant for drawn-out songs that sound like dark literature. For Damien Jurado, see our story on this page. MS/okkervilriver, MS/damienjurado.

TUESDAY

PLAN A: B.B. King, Etta James @ Humphrey's. B.B. King has served as the figurehead of electric blues for half a century. He's been inducted to every hall of fame worth mentioning. And blues is one of those rare genres of music where old age only adds to the music. With legendary jazz queen Etta James also on the bill, it's a rare chance to see two immovable figureheads of popular music before their respective twilights dim further. www.bbking.com, www.etta-james.com. PLAN B: Zombie Ghost Train, The Strikers, Those Rockn' Bullets @ The Zombie Lounge. Few area venues are as reliable for psychobilly as The Zombie Lounge. And on this night it's an especially good lineup for the greased-up fans--headed by Australia's Zombie Ghost Train. MS/zombie ghosttrain, MS/thestrikers, MS/thoserocknbullets. PLAN C: The Shamey Jays @ O'Connells. Sure, these older gentleman may not be featured in SPIN as the hip new thing--but the classic-rock songs are undeniably good, in the vein of The Modern Lovers or Joe Jackson. MS/shameyjays.
