MOXIE Theatre’s The Listene and the rest of this week's listings
Right before her eyes: John (Steven Lone) isn’t having one of his better days on post-apocalypse Earth. He made the mistake of visiting Junk City at its worst, and his captors are taking the price out of his hide. But the Listener (Jo Anne Glover) will intercede, even as she searches the heavens for the humanity that would resurrect the gutted planet—and she’ll discover that the means to Earth’s rescue were in front of her all along. MOXIE Theatre’s The Listener features Glover’s superb turn in the title role and an Amy Chini set that works for days. Playwright Liz Duffy Adams leaves a lot of action unaccounted for—there’s not enough catharsis to reconcile the conclusion, especially given the extent to which Junk City natives Jelly (Rachael Van Wormer) and Smak (Tim Parker) have their way with John (who eventually proves to be their savior). But Duffy Adams has a superb touch for language, with vocables like “frug that screep” and “I’m pigged” dotting the landscape as her stock in trade. Pretty nice show under director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg.
