ART
Oldie but goodie
This month’s Ray at Night is a gigantic ball of awesomeness. At Agitprop Gallery, 2837 University Ave., artists will go head-to-head with critic Kevin Freitas in live rounds of art criticism. Referee/gallery owner David White will be standing by in case things get too bloody. At Planet Rooth Studios, 3811 Ray St., more blood, possibly guts, and definitely a few goth beauties will be awaiting you in photographer Bryan Barnes’ solo show, NOIR. Across the street at The Rubber Rose, Ensenada-born graffiti artist Acamonchi will be showing his latest chaotic creations and down the road at 2865 North Park Way, Spacecraft gallery features master of steel Matt Devine, who’ll be showing his sculpture. Back on Ray Street, at Four Walls gallery, local artist Steve Gibson will be unveiling his latest set of monoprints and mixed-media drawings. The awesomeness goes on from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 14, in the heart of North Park. www.rayatnight.com.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Latest and greatest
What’s new at this year’s San Diego County Fair? When you walk through the fair’s welcoming gates, you’ll notice a huge spinning sculpture of a rippled man throwing a discus. It’s the first introduction you’ll get to 2008’s “summer sports” theme. Along those lines, the fair will showcase sports history, memorabilia, interactive exhibits and appearances by professional athletes every day, including Tony Gwynn and off-road racer Ivan “The Ironman” Stewart. Then there’s the food, of course. New this year is a grilled Cesar salad, deep-fried frog’s legs, deep-fried mac ’n’ cheese on a stick, cute little customized cupcakes and a monstrous barbecue/diesel truck called the Outlaw Grill. There are new rides, entertainment and attractions, too, and it all starts Saturday, June 14, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. 858-793-5555 or www.sdfair.com/fair.
COMMUNITY & POLITICS
Global rights
Voices of Women, a program dedicated to raising awareness of global issues, presents Women’s Rights are Human Rights, a panel of women speakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America. Each woman will discuss her country’s policies on human rights and women’s rights and Gloria Oloya, one of the panelists who works with the Campaign to End Genocide in Uganda, will talk about her organization’s progress. Fabiola Navarro, another panelist, will recount her experience as a Chilean attorney who was involved in the movement to end the Pinochet regime. The event is free and is happening at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice on the USD campus. peace.sandiego.edu or 619-260-7509.
BALBOA PARK
Experiential art
Artist Michele Guieu takes her daily experiences, mixes them with contemporary global events and makes art that reflects who she is and what she feels. Usually starting with photos she takes of family, friends and the landscapes around her, Guieu then layers and distorts the images to the point where they become shadows and symbols of their beginnings. It’s up to the viewer to interpret and figure each image out. From 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 13, the France-born artist presents Here It’s Peace, a solo show at the San Diego Art Institute’s Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park. www.micheleguieu.com or http://www.sandiego-art.org/.
Got pots?: Nothing says “I care” like a handmade gift. If, however, you barely have time to make a macaroni dinner, let alone a macaroni necklace, the San Diego Potters’ Guild’s got you covered. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, the guild presents their biannual sale at Spanish Village in Balboa Park. All the items are handmade and one-of-a-kind, and range from decorative pieces to functional ware like plates, bowls and coffee cups. Father’s Day, by the way, is just around the corner. 619-239-0507 or www.sandiegopottersguild.org.
FILM
You gashole!
Aside from coming up with a super-clever name, the makers of Gas Hole, a documentary about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels, have come up with a pretty clever tagline: “If you buy gas, you should see this movie.” In places like New York or San Francisco, it might not fly so well, but in freeway-filled San Diego, pretty much everyone is guilty of buying gasoline. So get in your car Tuesday, June 17, shell out the $10 in gas it will cost you to get up to Stone Brewing, 1999 Citracado Parkway in Escondido, and enjoy the 8 p.m. outdoor screening of Gas Hole followed by a meet-and-greet with the directors, Scott Roberts and Jeremy Wagener. Then, on your drive home, contemplate the benefits of buying a hybrid car. www.gasholemovie.com.
MUSIC
Summer soul
The San Diego Symphony is opening its Summer Pops season at the beautiful outdoor Embarcadero Marina Park South (on the bay behind the Convention Center) with a special Tux ’n’ Tennies Gala featuring dinner, dancing and an under-the-stars performance by soul songstress Dionne Warwick and Kool & The Gang and the symphony. The concert starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, and tickets start at $35. www.sandiegosymphony.com/summerpops or 619-237-1960.
