Brick by Brick
1130 Buenos Ave., Bay Parkwww.brickbybrick.com
This is known primarily as the place to see metal-band showcases. However, the owners have stepped it up recently, booking more non-metal acts and hip-hop, not to mention getting rid of that lingering puke smell.
Barra Barra
4016 Wallace St., Old Town619-291-3200
Awesome $5 margaritas plus fantastic tacos. Once you’re at Barra Barra, why would you ever leave?
High Dive
1801 Morena Blvd., Bay Parkwww.highdiveinc.com
Bay Park isn’t exactly a hotspot for local nightlife, but that’s probably the way this friendly neighborhood spot likes it. Its claims to fame are the L.T. shrine and the lunchbox collection.
Kelly’s Pub
222 San Diego Ave., Old Town619-543-9767
It’s known in the community as a cop bar, so you might want to stay away from Kelly’s if you have a few prior offenses. Otherwise, drink up.
Morena Club
1319 Morena Blvd., Bay Parkwww.myspace.com/morenaclub
Morena Club is all about the cheap happy-hour specials: $1.50 domestic brews, $2.50 drinks and $5.50 pitchers. Cheap is a theme, actually, as even during regular hours you can get a Patron for $5.50.
O’Connells
1310 Morena Blvd., Bay Parkwww.oconnellsbar-sd.com
An off-the-beaten-path dive that hosts karaoke on Thursdays and blues jams on Mondays. Live music other nights can be a mixed bag, but every next big thing’s gotta start somewhere.
O’Hungry’s
2547 San Diego Ave., Old Town619-298-0133
Like we’ve written before, O’Hungry’s really wants to watch you drink a yard of beer. They also want to see you eat their one pound burger and their foot-long hot dog. They’re all about big.
Offshore Tavern
2253 Morena Blvd., Bay Park619-276-2253
www.offshoretavern.com
What makes Offshore Tavern nifty is the all-day Monday happy hour and the garlic tater tots. People really, really like those tater tots.
Old Town Saloon
2495 San Diego Ave., Old Town619-298-2209
“No moms and dads, no strollers—just pure alcohol.”
Silver Spigot
2221 Morena Blvd., Bay Park619-276-1030
From the outside, it looks like a forgotten, dim-lit haunt, bound to be filled with old drunks and red vinyl booths. On the inside, it’s actually more of a garden-variety sports dive, smattered with average dudes and neighborhood locals.
Tio Leo’s
5302 Napa St., Bay Parkwww.tioleos.com
It ain’t the most authentic Mexican restaurant in town, but people aren’t coming here for the food. Leo’s has a separate bar, where live music plays several nights a week and middle-aged singles congregate.
