The Coffeehouse on Broadway (C.H.O.B.) on July 13 will host the debut of Wild Weekend, an all-female tribute to San Diego's '70s punk legends, The Zeros. The foursome includes guitarists Maren Parusel (Squiddo) and blog favorite Kelly Alvarez alongside the Atoms' Melissa (drums) and Kaitlin (bass). Making the show a must for punk fans, it will open with a screening of a never-before-seen-in-public 1977 concert film of The Zeros at San Francisco's infamous club, The Mabuhay Gardens. They'll also screen a short clip from the same year of the band on KFMB-TV's long-defunct morning show, Sun Up. MS/wildweekend07.
Qualcomm Stadium will host a daytime battle of the bands on July 15 that will be recorded for a new reality-TV series called Who's Got Riffs. Some of the area's fastest performers, including Greg Vaughn (Blasphemous Guitars), Benedictum, Collage Menage, Fuzz Huzzi and Hard Echo. www.whosgotriffs.com.
Rock band Demasiado has wrecked its tour van just in time to throw a massive wrench into plans to drive to Texas and rock the rednecks. The band is soliciting donations via its Myspace page in a last-ditch effort to make it to its Lone Star gigs (July 13 and 14). MS/demasiadomusic.
A few notable musicians are reuniting their sketch-comedy group for the first time in 14 years. The Honking Geese-Dallas McLaughlin (Bad Credit), Sean O'Donnell (Reeve Oliver), Brad Davis (Reeve Oliver) and Nick McCann (Danica's Crying)-will perform at the Lyceum Theatre on July 12 and 20.
Finally, Jason Hendrix (The North Atlantic) and Aren Skalman (ex-Rayleigh Scattering) will put on an art 'n' music show that riffs on the topics of nationalism, foreign police and plain old spin doctoring. It happens at Planet Rooth on July 14 as part of the Ray at Night event.
Still no word on performers, but tickets for the 17th Annual San Diego Music Awards-to be held at Viejas Concerts in the Park on Sept. 17-will go on sale July 21. (Full disclosure: CityBeat is a major sponsor/promoter of the awards show). MS/sandiegomusicawards.
In a case of clear typecasting, on Sept. 6 through Sept. 9, cover band Rockola-along with multi-instrumentalist Tripp Sprague-will back a slew of '60s legends during performances of Love In: A Musical Celebration of 1967 at the Birch North Park Theatre. The shows, which will be taped for commercial release, include a narrative detailing the music of the era alongside performances from Peter & Gordon, Jesse Colin Young, Vanilla Fudge frontman Vince Martell, Earl Thomas and acclaimed guitarist Eric Johnson. www.loveinthemusical.com.
In former-San Diegan news, terrific Appalachian-style crooner Tom Brosseau is hooking up with John Parish (best known for his collaborations with PJ Harvey) for his new album, Cavalier, due Oct. 23 on FatCat Records. Parish will add some instrumental flourishes and snazzy recording sounds.
