Locals only

Notes from the smoking patio

House of Blues will start a new monthly local-music showcase on June 19 called "San Diego Rocks." The opening night includes sets by Get Back Loretta, High Rolling Loners and Goodbye Blue Monday. Tickets cost $10, though each band will be given 75 tickets to give away to friends and fans. The bands will then get $1 for each of the friends-and-fans tickets that come through the door. www.hob.com/venues/clubvenues/sandiego.

Ryan Ferguson has signed with Better Looking Records for his next album, Only Trying to Help. His song "In the Sea" will be included in the upcoming Dana Brown surf film, Highwater, due this summer. www.my space.com/ryanferguson.

Demasiado, the new band featuring ex-members of FenixTX and The Classified, just added another notable "ex"-Wade Youman, the original drummer for Unwritten Law. They'll play at Soma on June 2. www.myspace.com/demasiadomusic.

The Farmers have recorded a new version of The Beat Farmers' classic "Glad 'n' Greasy," with Sven-Erik Seaholm producing, for an upcoming Buddy Blue tribute disc. www.myspace.com/thefarmersmusic.

What's the Tower Bar without a frickin' tower? That's what the San Diego Redevelopment Agency must have thought when it dedicated $225,000 to put the 80-foot trademark back on the roof of the local watering hole and music venue. Construction is set to be finished in September. www.myspace.com/ thetowerbar.

North County's aspiring young performers will soon have a hands-on way to learn about the music business, thanks to 7th Day Buskers frontman Shawn P. Rohlf and Chris Conner of Channing Cope. The duo has organized the inaugural "Rock Band Camp" this summer at the Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito in Carmel Valley. Open to students between 10 and 17 years old, two separate sessions will run for one week each: June 25 through 29 and July 30 through Aug. 3. The kiddos will be placed in "bands" and coached through the process of creating a song, putting on a live gig and, finally, recording their creations. Notable guest speakers include Swami Records honcho and ex-Rocket from the Crypt frontman John Reis, 94.9-FM's Mike Halloran, producer Ben Moore and promoter Chad Waldorf. www.positive placesd.org, www.shawnprohlf.com.

Watch out for The Swedish Models. Lead vocals will be shared by two standouts of the local scene: Vinyl Radio's multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bernhardt and Ryan Waller. Waller's former band, The Jury, died a premature death following the completion of their impressive debut EP, so it's good to hear he's back in action. Also in the band are Andrew McNally (The Jury, Rookie Card), Dusty Paul (Vinyl Radio) and Mark Wiskowski (Roses on Her Grave, ex-Cape May). They make their debut at the Beauty Bar on May 25. www.myspace.com/theswedishmodels.

There's still time to enter a music video in the San Diego Film Festival's second annual "Film Rocks" competition. Selected works will be screened during the 2007 festival, set for Sept. 27 through 30 in the Gaslamp Quarter. Entry costs $25 and must be postmarked no later than June 1. Last year drew a wide field of contestants ranging from Jane Lui to Pearl Jam. www.sdff.org/submissions.html.

CD-release shows this week:

The San Diego Songwriter's Guild presents three releases at one show-Candice Graham, Nate Donnis and Mike Officer- at the Belly Up on May 23. www.sdsongwriters.org.

Singer-songwriter Aaron Bowen performs at Lestat's on May 26. www.myspace.com/ aaronbowen.

Punk band The New Addiction is at The Zombie Lounge on May 25 www.myspace.com/thenewaddictionmusic.
