Gossip from the local music scene
Inside the odd-smelling trenches
Bearded punk bassist Mike Watt (ex-Minutemen, fIREHOSE) has been playing songs from the Truckee Brothers on his weekly Internet radio show called “The Watt From Pedro Show” (www.twfps.com). Said Watt: “I like the Truckee Brothers' sound on records. I have yet to see them play live, though. Hell, I wanna share the stage with them, get on the same bill at a gig in San Diego or wherever.” The Truckees have finished their second full-length album, Double Happiness, and will hone the new material at the Tower Bar on Feb. 22 before heading to the South-by-Southwest Music Festival in March. www.truckeebrothers.com.
Dynamite Walls will also be heading to South-by-Southwest to play a party thrown by Puma and URB magazine. They've recorded a new album with Monsters Are Waiting guitarist Jonathan Siebels and are trying to decide whether or not to release it on their own or wait for the right label offer (a few have been made). They've also signed on with the same lawyer who handles Cold War Kids and Delta Spirit. www.myspace.com/thesedynamitewalls.
Rapper Addiquit has recorded a few tracks with Tampa-based rap trio Yo Majesty (www.myspace.com/yomajesty4life). Addiquit hopes to include the songs on her debut album, which she plans to start recording in March with New York City DJ Machinedrum. www.myspace.com/addiquit.
Sometimes artists release half-assed odds 'n' ends EPs to satiate fans between records. If you're Jason Mraz, Target does the half-assing for you. The Big Red Anus of Commerce is putting out The Influences, a 15-disc series of compilation albums devoted to the songs that influence pop stars. Mraz is one of 'em, along with Sarah McLachlan (influenced by zinfandel), Dave Matthews (influenced by frat hippies, or “frappies”) and Avril Lavigne (influenced by her stylists). www.jasonmraz.com
The March issue of Guitar One magazine includes a CD-Rom of guitar lessons from former Zappa stunt guitarist Mike Keneally. www.keneally.com.
Blues diva Candye Kane's next album, Guitar'd and Feathered (due April 22) will include cameos from blues and rock icons Junior Watson, Sue Foley and former Blaster Dave Alvin. www.myspace.com/candykaneband.
Sleeping People-one of the city's most impressive instrumental rock bands-has spawned two new spin-offs. Phenom drummer Brandon Relf (also drummer for The Vultures) has started Way Back from the Get Slow, whose sets include Relf and a revolving cast of friends playing 15 to 20 minutes of free improv. The other project is an ambient bass-and-guitar duo, Cloak, that features Joileah Maddock and Kasey Boekholt, with Maddock's brother, Mark Lacsamana, playing bass clarinet. Cloak plays at The Casbah on Feb. 27. Sleeping People are almost finished with their second full-length album, which will be released in October on Brooklyn-based label Temporary Residence Ltd. (Rob Crow, Explosions in the Sky). www.sleepingpeople.com, www.myspace.com/cloakmusic.
Andre Che, vocalist for the defunct Cape May-the only rock band besides Superunloader that Ocean Beach hippies seemed to tolerate-has started a new band called Calico Cartel. Their six-song EP, Kill The Lights, was recorded at Louis XIV's studio and released on Feb. 21. www.myspace.com/calicocartel.
The San Diego Jazz Party, a mini music fest, will take place at the Hilton in Del Mar Feb. 23 through 25. The weekend includes 18 performers and a Sunday night concert honoring Jeanie Cheatham and her late husband Jimmy. www.sandiegojazzparty.com.
CD-release shows this week
Jazz bassist/vocalist Kristin Korb & her trio: Feb. 23 at Dizzy's. And hip-hop duo Diego Brown: Feb. 24 at Ole Madrid.
WE SUCK: In last week's issue, we reported that Clock Work Army guitarist Scott Wheeler left the band to serve as the photographer for pop group Augustana. Not true. According to Clock Work's label, Banter Records, Wheeler left to focus on his side project, Indian Moon. Clock Work's bassist, Dave Pettijohn, left to be Augustana's photog. Banter swears the band will continue, which makes us giddy. More details when available. www.myspace.com/theclockworkarmy, www.myspace.com/indianmoon.
