Gossip from the local music scene

Recovering Addiquit

With The Casbah jammed and at least a third of the crowd singing along on Dec. 26, you would've thought that Rocket From the Crypt had reformed. Instead, it was comedy hip-hop band Bad Credit playing their first gig in a year--apparently, "breaking up as a marketing plan" works even for mid-level local bands.

The night also marked the live debut of San Diego hip-hop artist Addiquit. Used to be that maiden gigs were attended by a handful of friends, but, thanks to MySpace, buzz about Addiquit's hot, grimy hip-hop spread to CityBeat and local music blogs.

The buzz got even louder at the venue--not about her music, but about whether the stumbling, slurring MC was coherent enough to play. Eventually, she did stagger on stage and performed a 10-minute set that was part drunken spectacle and part promise, in which she freestyled and asserted "I'm a street bitch" over and over to a small, gawking crowd.

"I know I was too [intoxicated]... The Casbah was the first 'big show' for me," she later said, asserting it wasn't nerves that caused her to drink up. "I think I've set the record for being thrown out of bars here in San Diego. My friend suggested I play the next show at lunchtime."

Despite pulling a Courtney Love at her first gig, there's a lot to be excited about with Addiquit's arrival on the scene. Along with Miki Vale and MC Flow, she's injecting local hip-hop with some seriously talented female blood. So far, she's recorded some songs with L.A. engineer Aaron Fessel, who's worked with John Legend and Snoop Dogg. Her song "Street Bitch" will appear on the next release by Brooklyn DJ Machinedrum, who produced her MySpace tracks. The two will start work on her debut album in February, but Addiquit is also searching for a San Diego-based producer.

"I apologize for letting anyone down if I did," she said of the Casbah gig. "It's nothing personal. I'm a street bitch. I'm capable of moving planets and doing damage, but I'm probably [going to] say what I want on stage."

Addiquit plays with MC Flow, Miki Vale, Plain Jane and Sirah at Hot Monkey Love Cafe on Jan. 16. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5. 619-469-4113. www.badcredit2000.com, www.myspace.com/addiquitmusic, www.myspace.com/mikivale, www.myspace.com/mcflow, www.myspace.com/emceeplainjane, www.myspace.com/sirahone.

CLUB LOVE

We're not even one week into 2007 and you've already broken how many New Year's resolutions?! Don't sweat it. Your personal commitment to "more ass-shaking" this year is the only resolution that really matters, anyway. Yes, my friend, 2007 is the year you achieve dance-floor greatness.

Kick off the first weekend of your yearlong bootie bash Jan. 6 in North Park at Kadan (4696 30th St.) for its "BrokenBeat Night." Every first Saturday of the month, the BrokenBeat kids heat things up with live electronic music, this month featuring the dirty hip-hop beats of the Skrapez crew, Tenshun and Deth Shepard, the genius sound experiments of Memeshift and DJ Tuffer's booming blend of drum and bass.

As your dance extravaganza marches on into the next weekend, you're going to be faced with a difficult choice between two equally solid events on Jan. 13--"Parco Eclectico" and "Share." The after-party for the monthly Ray at Night art walk in North Park, "Parco Eclectico" happens at Bluefoot Bar & Lounge (3404 30th St.) from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. each month, hosted by different businesses in the area--this month by the folks at Kate Ross clothing boutique. DJs Mark E Quark and Shige spin a wide range of music, including disco dub, funk, deep house and more eclectic sounds in the same vein as Garth, DJ Harvey and Hugh Herrera.

"Share" is the San Diego offshoot of the event that originated in New York City--a monthly open jam for electronic audio and visual artists who bring their own portable equipment to plug into the network of amplification and projection systems inside Kava Lounge (2812 Kettner Blvd). The artists improvise on each other's electronic signals to create an incredible--and highly danceable--live performance. "Share" not only serves as a meeting of local electronic minds, but also allows hardcore audiophiles to witness the creation of living, breathing electronic art.

Dance onward, 2007!
