Holiday with The Beach Boys

For their new album, Songs for Feeling Strong, Americana trio Holiday and the Adventure Pop Collective include a recast version of The Beach Boys' classic, "Surfer Girl."
What makes this cover more interesting than other retreads is that B-Boy Al Jardine lent his vocals to the track. The disc was recorded at the rock 'n' roll hall of famer's studio in Big Sur, during sessions that were more celebratory than most.
"[We] went through four kegs of beer in two days," laughed Holiday's tuba playing guitarist, Louis Caverly. "We did all basic tracking in front of a live audience, which Jardine attended."
Getting Jardine to participate in the recording was as simple as asking, and Holiday was able to return the favor almost immediately. "Al asked us if we were willing to give up a day of recording to fit in a session with himself and Brian Wilson," Caverly said. Agreeing to delay their own project, the group was allowed to hang out in the studio with Wilson and Jardine during their session.
With so many Beach Boys hits to choose from, Caverly gives a succinct reason for their choice: "Because chicks who surf are hot." MS/holidayandtheadventurepopcollective.

Catching just about everyone by surprise, 40,000 copies of the new album by melodic heavy-metal heads As I Lay Dying were sold in the first week following its Aug. 21 release. Those figures placed An Ocean Between Us at No. 8 on the Billboard Top 200, No. 1 on the Hard Rock Chart and No. 2 on the Internet Sales Chart. Another metal band with San Diego ties sold a few records the same week. Poodle-haired '80s rockers Ratt managed to sell 3,500 copies of Tell the World: The Very Best of Ratt (which, by name, apparently trumps their 2002 hits package, The Essentials). MS/therattpack.
Pinback unleash their next album, Autumn of the Seraphs, on Sept. 11 with an in-store performance at Lou's Records the same day. Autumn's first pressing will include a limited-edition bonus disc with three unreleased tracks. The album will also be available on vinyl, which includes a certificate for a free download of the album. Pinback will head out on Sept. 19 for a six-week tour of the U.S. MS/pinback.
Pop-punk band Pensive will also hold a release show for their self-titled disc on Sept. 8 at the Epicentre, and singer-songwriter Jane Lui releases Barkentine with a gig at Lestat's on Sept. 14. MS/pacificrecords, MS/janeshands.
On Sept. 9, 'Canes will host the 33rd birthday party for P.O.D. guitarist Marcos Curiel. The celebration will include sets from P.O.D., Sprung Monkey, October Burning and Get Back Loretta. MS/payableondeath.
Although San Diego isn't generally known for its jazz scene, Sept. 3 through 9 has been officially designated "San Diego Jazz Week" by the folks at City Hall. A week of shows at venues including Anthology, The Onyx Room and Copley Auditorium will culminate at the-third-annual Ocean Beach Jazz Festival on Sept. 9. The event will include a rare appearance by legendary guitarist Mundell Lowe with The Dave Pike Quartet. www.objazz.org.
Voting for the 2007 San Diego Music Awards ends at midnight on Sept. 5. The winners will be announced during the Sept. 17 ceremony at Viejas Concerts in the Park, featuring two-song sets by Jason Mraz, Reeve Oliver, Buck-O-Nine, Lady Dottie & The Diamonds, The Truckee Brothers and The Real Sean Jon (a collaboration between Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins and Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman). This year's Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Nick Reynolds of The Kingston Trio. Music at the after-party will be provided by MEX and The Palominos.
