Here's where I'd be
Where to spend your weekly allowance for casino-circuit ’80s sensations and the rest of this week's live music
These are bands we especially dig, not
full listings. For those, please see
Concerts and Clubs. For more top shows featuring local acts please see Nightgeist.
Wednesday, May 7
PLAN A: Tapes ‘n Tapes, White Denim @ The Casbah. TnT has taken some lumps for Walk it Off, but at least the Minneapolis indie-poppers didn’t name the album “Rub Some Dirt on It.” PLAN B: Nina Nastasia, David Karsten Daniels @ Bar Pink Elephant. Nastasia is a good enough singer/songwriter to earn accolades from deejay John Peel and producer Steve Albini. But people still probably mistake her for an extra in Eastern Promises. PLAN C: Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo @ San Diego Sports Arena. Some people want it all, but I don’t want nothing at all if it ain’t a neo-soul superstar playing a crumbling coliseum in Point Loma. BACKUP PLAN: Fern Knight @ Che Café.
Thursday, May 8
PLAN A: Vetiver, ASTRA, Jonathan Wilson @ The Casbah. Vetiver is made up of Devendra Banhart folk compatriots so rootsy they named themselves after a type of grass. Or maybe they just really dig botany. PLAN B: Sayvinyl, Reeve Oliver, Irradio @ Belly Up. San Diego indie rockers Sayvinyl sign the Treaty of Solana Beach to reach an armistice with compact discs for the release of God Forbid. PLAN C: Duran Duran @ Valley View Casino. There goes my allowance for one casino-circuit ’80s sensation a week. Sorry, ZZ Top. BACKUP PLAN: Rock for Africa Benefit @ ’Canes.
Friday, May 9
PLAN A: Devin the Dude @ ’Canes. If you’re looking for the rapper who’s made an appearance on everything from Dre’s “Fuck You” to Jay-Z’s “Pussy” remix, The Dude abides. PLAN B: Floater, Vocoder @ Brick by Brick. Floater has managed to build a rabid alt-rock following in the Pacific Northwest for a band with a name that’s slang for dangling crud in your nose and/or toilet. PLAN C: D Numbers, Mute Socialite @ Chasers. D Numbers are progressive eclectics from Santa Fe who play music to differentiate themselves from all the other progressive eclectics in Santa Fe. BACKUP PLAN: Z-Trip @ On Broadway.
Saturday, May 10
PLAN A: Switches, She Wants Revenge, Be Your Own Pet @ House of Blues. Flip the switch over to our feature on here. PLAN B: The Sess, Red Feathers, Thin Man @ The Casbah. The Sess takes “CD release” to a new level by giving away free copies of Agendumb to the very people who were most likely to buy it. PLAN C: Gator by the Bay Festival @ Spanish Landing. Coming up next on Deadliest Catch: 5,000 miles southeast of Dutch Harbor, the crew of the Cornelia Marie ogles more than 25 musical acts and 8,000 pounds of crawfish. BACKUP PLAN: John “OO” Fleming @ On Broadway.
Sunday, May 11
PLAN A: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Port O’Brien @ Beauty Bar. Go back to the U.S.S.R. with our SSLYBY feature here. PLAN B: Air Traffic, Republic of Letters @ SOMA. Major Tom to Ground Control, catchy English indie rockers Air Traffic are about to step through the door. PLAN C: Northern State, The Dollyrots, MC Flow @ The Casbah. An X chromosome version of The Beastie Boys trades rhymes with San Diego’s MC Flow while The Dollyrots try to figure out how their punk band ended up on this bill. BACKUP PLAN: Joe Jackson @ Humphrey’s.
Monday, May 12
PLAN A: The Show is the Rainbow @ Bar Pink Elephant. If your Monday nights just haven’t been strange enough lately, here’s a one-man electronic/hip-hop/rock band from Nebraska. PLAN B: The Muslims, The Carrots, Fantastic Magic @ The Casbah. The Muslims continue their perpetual search for some “Nightlife” with some Austin ladies (The Carrots) who have a soft spot for The Ronettes. PLAN C: Sirhan Sirhan, The Family Curse, Batwings @ Zombie Lounge. Sirhan Sirhan returns from playing 12 shows in 11 states in 18 days (to promote the upcoming Blood) and, man, are they pissed about it.
Tuesday, May 13
PLAN A: Langhorne Slim, Ferraby Lionheart, The Smart Brothers @ The Casbah. Langhorne Slim and Ferraby Lionheart: two neo-folk rockers who play music that’s a lot better than their ridiculous names. PLAN B: Les Nubians @ Anthology. Two sultry agent provocateurs from France who boast collabos with Black Eyed Peas and Talib Kweli settle in for two nights at Anthology. PLAN C: Alas, Alak, Alaska! @ Chasers. Somebody gave the chick who played The Ghost of Christmas Present in Scrooged a guitar and some antidepressants. BACKUP PLAN: Curtis Fuller @ Saville Theater.

uh... floater wasn't playing last night at brick by brick. two taxi rides, one to brick by brick and one back downtown at 20 bucks each makes your free rag's advice pretty expensive. floater is playing on the 23rd of may.
