Local boys Angels & Airwaves, a green beer and Irish music affair and the rest of this week in live music

By Nathan Dinsdale

These are bands we especially dig, not full listings. For those, please see Concerts and Clubs. For more top shows featuring local acts, please see Nightgeist.

Wednesday, March 12

PLAN A: Beach House, Papercuts, Calico Horse @ The Casbah. The ethereal Baltimore duo behind Beach House built their indie atmospherics on the sands of, like, time beside the tranquil waters of, you know, life, man. PLAN B: Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra @ Anthology. Just when you thought everything had been done before, New York composer/musician Travis Sullivan goes out and launches an 18-piece ensemble offering jazz interpretations of Bjork songs. And you thought she was strange enough on her own. PLAN C: Clutch, Murder by Death @ House of Blues. Clutch and MbyD give a teeth-gritting, fist-pumping, head-butting rebuttal to atmospheric Baltimore duos and quirky New York jazz ensembles. BACKUP PLAN: Matthew Good, Veronica May @ Belly Up.

Thursday, March 13

PLAN A: Angels & Airwaves, Meg & Dia, The Color Fred @ SOMA. The last time “local” boys A&A played San Diego, it was in December at Cox Arena. This show offers more intimate surroundings for the musical methadone that feeds your fleeting blink-182 fix. PLAN B: Mad Professor, Elijah Emanuel @ The Casbah. The Mad Prof wrote the syllabus for Dub 101 while collaborating with reggae/dub legends like Lee “Scratch” Perry and remixing everyone from Massive Attack and Sade to Depeche Mode and The Beastie Boys. PLAN C: The White Buffalo, The Blackout Party, Carbine @ The Casbah. The white buffalo is both a revered animal in Native American culture and a big, shaggy Caucasian dude from L.A. who sings songs about pain, hope and how both can be remedied by alcohol and cigarettes. BACKUP PLAN: River City, Old Man Hands @ Ken Club.

Friday, March 14

PLAN A: Brother Ali, Abstract Rude @ ’Canes. Brother Ali has a thing for honesty, given that his song “Truth Is,” from his latest album (Undisputed Truth), is being performed on his current Truth is Here tour. Truth is, Bro is the best Rhymesayers rhymeslayer around. PLAN B: Acid Mothers Temple, Danava @ Che Café. There are various incarnations of Acid Mothers Temple (ATM & The Cosmic Inferno, AMT & The Pink Ladies Blues, etc.), but, for our purposes, this version of the Japanese psychedelics is AMT & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. And, no, I don’t know what that means. PLAN C: Benny Benassi @ On Broadway. The Italian DJ/producer recently strayed from the house (music) long enough to pick up a 2008 Grammy for his remix of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise.” The noise, it appears, has already been brought. BACKUP PLANS: Too Short @ 4th & B, Silverstein @ SOMA and Alice Smith @ The Casbah.

Saturday, March 15

PLAN A: The Boredoms @ ’Canes. These veteran experimental noise-rockers from Osaka may be a lot of things (perplexing, thought-provoking geniuses and/or unlistenable, migraine-inducing nutjobs) but boring ain’t one of ’em. PLAN B: Explosions in the Sky @ SOMA. In general, purely instrumental bands are typically good for one of three things—background music, theatrical scores and curing insomnia. Explosions nails the best two out of three. PLAN C: West Indian Girl, Wendy Darling, a.m. Vibe @ The Casbah. If your band (say, West Indian Girl) is going to add some psychedelic elements to its multidimensional indie rock, you might as well name the group after a type of acid. BACKUP PLAN: Particle featuring Robby Krieger @ House of Blues.

Sunday, March 16

PLAN A: Richard Julian, Flimz @ Lestat’s. This New York singer/songwriter looks a little like Salvador Dali but eschews surreal melting clocks and stilt-legged animals in favor of the quirky realities of everyday life. PLAN B: Midnite, Vegitation, DJ Carlos Culture @ Belly Up. Reggae from the U.S. Virgin Islands (Midnite) and San Diego (Vegitation) that’ll turn you into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight. PLAN C: Flora Purim & Airto Moreira  @ Anthology. Wife-and-husband duo Flora & Airto do for Brazilian jazz (and ampersands) what Sonny & Cher did for pop, Ike & Tina did for R&B and Mike & Ike did for oblong jelly beans.  BACKUP PLAN: Rafter @ Tower Bar.

Monday, March 17

PLAN A: ShamRockFestival @ The Gaslamp Quarter. Green beer, The Young Dubliners, The Downs Family, green beer, the Stuart Martz Band, some DJs, a cover band and some more green beer. PLAN B: The Bleeding Irish @ House of Blues. One might be inclined to make an easy joke about what the Irish actually bleed (Guinness, potato starch, etc.) but these fiery folksters are being metaphorical. I think. Otherwise, you might pass them a Band-Aid. PLAN C: Shawn Mullins, Pieta Brown @ Belly Up. The only kind of bleeding this Irish-surnamed singer/songwriter does in his songs is of the hemorrhaging-heart variety. BACKUP PLAN: Inglewood @ Beauty Bar.

Tuesday, March 18

PLAN A: Cadence Weapon, Born Ruffians, Inberst @ The Casbah. Our feature on Cadence Weapon is cocked and loaded on this page. PLAN B: Nada Surf, Sea Wolf @ House of Blues. Whatever you do, do not, under any circumstances, ask indie-pop practitioners Nada Surf to play “Popular.” They really hate that. PLAN C: String Cheese Incident (movie screening) @ Belly Up. The only thing more bemusing than watching a bunch of Cheeseheads wig out at an actual SCI show is to watch them do it while they watch a high-def concert video of an actual SCI show. BACKUP PLAN: Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista Sounds @ Che Café.
