Here's where I'd be

The local music scene's top shows of the week, day by day

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 10

PLAN A: Rogue Wave, Port O'Brien @ The Casbah. Rogue Wave's newest may not make good on the band's promise, but Zach Rogue still crafts some deadly pretty Shins--esque harmony pop. Oakland's Port O'Brien is an up--and--comer, playing acoustic, raw singalong folk--off--key and delightfully deranged. MS/roguewave, MS/portobrien. PLAN B: Redman @ 'Canes. The New Jersey rapper has acted in a Chuckie sequel and done kid--raps for Nickelodeon, but his 2007 release, Red Gone Wild, proved that his wit (sharp, funny, kinda gross) hasn't been co--opted. MS/redman. PLAN C: The Icarus Line @ Beauty Bar. Though their fuck--everyone, sex--drugs--rock attitude is easy to hate, the abusive, Stooges--meets--BRMC rock of this L.A. band is easy to dig. MS/icarusline. BACKUP PLAN: The Bridge @ Winston's (MS/thebridgebaltimore).

THURSDAY, OCT. 11

PLAN A: The Woggles, The Creepy Creeps @ Bar Pink Elephant. Atlanta's The Woggles are exactly the sort of stomping, trebly garage rock that Lenny Kaye would've loved when putting together his now famous Nuggets tapes. Half salvation sermon, half dance party. Like Man or Astroman? before them, The Creepy Creeps manage to make surf--rock seem much more than a genre exercise (see our feature on this page). MS/thewoggles, MS/thecreepycreeps. PLAN B: Polysics, Numbers @ The Casbah. The Devo--loving Japanese punks in Polysics put on a show that's part Power Rangers, part Guitar Hero, shot through with disorienting electronics. San Francisco's Numbers is a female--led no--wave band for fans of Clinic and Broadcast. MS/polysicsordie, MS/numbersmusic. PLAN C: Captain No. 1, Seamonster, Black Hurricane @ Scolari's Office. Virginia Beach's Seamonster is the standout here, a charming, hazy lo--fi pop thing. San Diego's Black Hurricane is new--a one--man project that shows a pretty good grasp of distorted garage--blues. MS/seamonstersongs, MS/captain  number1, MS/blackhurricanemusic.

FRIDAY, OCT. 12

PLAN A: Rilo Kiley, the bird and the bee, Grand Ole Party @ Soma. This one's been anticipated for a while, since it showcases the fruits of the relationship between indie darlings Rilo Kiley and San Diego's own next--it--thing, Grand Ole Party. Judging from reviews of the tour written in the last month, it seems GOP has stolen the show on a number of occasions. For the bird and the bee, see our CD review on Page 34. MS/rilokiley, MS/thebirdandthebee, MS/grandoleparty. PLAN B: B.B. King, The Blind Boys of Alabama @ Open Air Theatre. The blues legend joins with the gospel icons at Photocharity's fundraiser to help fight youth homelessness. www.bbking.com, MS/blindboysofalabama. PLAN C: MF Doom @ 'Canes. With recent accusations that the masked hip--hop maestro has sent impostors to perform in his stead, Doom should have extra motivation to put on a hell of a show. MS/mfdoom. BACKUP PLAN: Matt the Electrician @ Lestat's (MS/matttheelectrician).

SATURDAY, OCT. 13

PLAN A: Transfer, Roses on Her Grave @ The Ken Club. Two top local bands. Transfer's new material is sounding a little bit "Ground Control to Major Tom." And whether or not you like the spacey direction, the band--with Matt Molarius' huge, high--pitched voice--never disappoints. Roses on Her Grave is a pretty solid male--female Southern--rock band, raspy yowls over chunky blues riffs. MS/transfer

band, MS/rosesonhergrave. PLAN B: Dudley Perkins, Deep Rooted @ Dream Street. Good show for the Dream. Stones Throw recording artist Dudley Perkins is a left--field hip--hop poet who runs with Madlib. Deep Rooted is San Diego's premier act when it comes to mellow, soulful, J5--type hip--hop. MS/dud leyperkins, MS/deeprootedent. PLAN C: Hacienda Brothers, Bartender's Bible @ The Casbah. It's the CD--release show for Hacienda Bros., the old--time country--and--western project (with a touch of Tex Mex accordion) of ex--Paladins mastermind Dave Gonzalez. Bartender's Bible is dirty Merle--country, the sort who seem to live the outlaw lore. MS/haciendabroth
ers, MS/bartendersbible. BACKUP PLAN: The Whisky Dicks, Grins Edge @ The Alibi (MS/myspacethewhiskeydicks, MS/grinsedge).

SUNDAY, OCT. 14

PLAN A: The Silent Comedy, The Burning of Rome, Demasiado @ The Jumping Turtle. The Silent Comedy has become one of San Diego's standouts--moody indie--folk with a revival--tent shtick. The Burning of Rome is what might happen if Man Man crashed a Rilo Kiley concert. Demasiado does the Interpol croon--rock thing pretty well, though they're better when stripped and raw. MS/thesilent comedy, MS/theburningofrome, MS/demasiado music. PLAN B: Writer, Swim Party, The Henry Clay People @ The Zombie Lounge. Another good, mostly local bill, highlighted by Swim Party. With off--kilter pop songs that bring to mind Modest Mouse without ripping them off, they're probably one of the most underrated acts in town. MS/swimparty, MS/writer, MS/thehenryclaypeople. PLAN C: Martin Sexton, Martyn Joseph @ Belly Up. Though the song structure is straight--ahead folk rock, Martin Sexton's voice is a mighty thing to behold. MS/martinsexton. BACKUP PLAN: Mobius Band, Lights On @ The Casbah (MS/mobiusband, MS/lightsonband).

MONDAY, OCT. 15

PLAN A: USSA, Oxbow @ The Casbah. If you love arty post--punk and industrial music, this show's for you. USSA is the new project by ex--members of Jesus Lizard (guitarist Duane Denison) and Ministry (bassist Paul Barker), which will draw people out. But San Francisco's Oxbow might steal the show--a spazzy art--rock abuse--machine that's closer to Jesus Lizard than USSA is. MS/ussaband, www.theoxbow.com. PLAN B: Duncan Sheik, Holly Brook @ Belly Up. Known best for his AAA hit "Barely Breathing," Sheik has grown into something more adventurous and intriguing with age. Holly Brook is a talented girl--with--guitar from L.A. with a breathy bit of soul. MS/duncansheik, MS/hollybrook. PLAN C: The Long and Short of It, Dragged by Horses, Hostile Combover @ The Ken Club. Two of San Diego's best hardcore outfits--The Long and Short of It and Hostile Combover--join with Northern California's violently staccato band, Dragged by Horses. MS/thelongand shortofit, MS/draggedbyhorses, MS/hostilecombover.

TUESDAY, OCT. 16

PLAN A: Meshell N'Degeocello, Van Hunt @ Belly Up. N'Degeocello is one of the most inspiring soul--R&B--hip--hop artists the world has to offer. Through eight albums now, she's managed to make her sharp diatribes on gender roles and race sound like pure sex. She also plays almost all the instruments on parts of her new album, The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams. Van Hunt is an underrated soul singer and guitarist who partially fills the D'Angelo--sized hole in the genre. MS/meshellndegeocello, MS/van
hunt. PLAN B: Delta Spirit, The Prayers, We Barbarians @ The Casbah. Delta Spirit is the Jesus--referencing white--boy--soul rock band that's received national attention through tours with Cold War Kids and Dr. Dog. MS/deltaspirit, MS/thefuckingprayers, MS/webarbarians. PLAN C: Sacha Boutros Sextet @ Anthology. Sacha's one of San Diego's more talented jazz singers, specializing in Latin and bossa nova. MS/jazzsacha.
