The Eat, Drink & Freedom to Marry event and much more

By Candice Woo

More field testing is probably needed, but I’m almost ready to add Aero Club to my regular rotation. The India Street bar offers a mother lode of whiskeys and scotch (more than 100 varieties), Bear Republic beers, free wi-fi, a good jukebox and big comfy booths, and, as a deal-sealer, they were screening The Big Lebowski the last time I was there. My favorite drink, a Manhattan made with Michter’s rye whiskey, was a little less expensive than elsewhere, which made it go down all the smoother. 3365 India St., Middletown, 619-297-7211.

Eat, Drink and the Freedom to Marry is a one-day event on Thursday, Sept. 18, that will benefit the campaign against Proposition 8, an initiative that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. On Thursday, a number of local restaurants and bars will donate a portion of their proceeds to help support the marriage-equality movement. Participating restaurants include Soltan Banoo, Bite, The Better Half, Crest Café and Baja Betty’s. See www.myspace.com/eatdrinkfreedom2marry for details.

I’ve been noticing more gluten-free foods available lately in shops and on menus, and that’s good news for people with food allergies. On the sweet side, Rachel Marie of Mari Made bakes up gluten-free scones, muffins, brownies and even ready-to-bake cookie dough. I got a chance to try her glossy-topped black bottom cupcake, a triple-chocolate wonder of chocolate cake, mascarpone-chocolate filling and chocolate glaze. That and the lemon shortbread square that I sampled were delicious and didn’t taste like they were missing a thing. Dairy or egg-free desserts can also be ordered, plus Mari Made delivers in San Diego. www.marimade.net.

Free gelato! Local Chuao Chocolatier is celebrating its anniversary by giving out free scoops of gelato (while supplies last) at each of its four San Diego cafés on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. See www.chuaochoclatier.com for locations. Chuao also just released a new chocolate bar called Firecracker, a blend of dark chocolate, chipotle, salt and a popping candy similar to Pop Rocks. Sounds a little strange, but I’ve had it, and it’s a great combination.
