A new sushi spot, the details on the Taste of Downtown and more
It sounds like something from a dream, but I have confirmation that Sushi Ota will open a second restaurant, Hane, this fall on Fifth Avenue in Bankers Hill, next to Avenue 5 Restaurant. The new place will be run by a veteran of the Pacific Beach restaurant and will feature the same pristine fish as Sushi Ota, with an expanded menu. Although there are two new sushi restaurants on the same street, this is the one I’ll be saving my pennies for.
If you’ve got a hankering for a Vietnamese sandwich and a Swedish dessert, find them both at Sorrento Bakery in Mira Mesa. Their bahn mi sandwiches are decent, and the No. 6 grilled pork is good, but they do bigger business with their cakes and pastries. There’s the Swedish Princess cake, a girly confection of sponge cake, vanilla cream and raspberry jam covered in mint-green marzipan; Swedish rum balls; and the Swedish Vacuum Cleaner, a chocolate rum cake wrapped in marzipan. I like the Jitterbug, a swirl of butter-cookie dough and chewy-crisp almond meringue. 6755 Mira Mesa Blvd. 858-909-0599.
Warm weekend nights out in Golden Hill end pretty happily when you’re sitting on Pizzeria Luigi’s big outdoor patio enjoying a wide, crispy slice. I love the crust, and I’m a big fan of the spinach-ricotta pie, although the sun-dried tomato and spinach is winning me over. Luigi’s is open until 12:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and beer is served, too, though Luigi only takes cash, so save a few dollars for some late-night sustenance. 1137 25th St.
