Did you know?

Now you do

By Martin Jones Westlin

Betcha didn't know that India is the world's largest democracy, with its population at 1.13 billion souls and climbing. Betcha also didn't know that India is the largest producer of commercial films in the history of the universe. Betcha also didn't know that India is in the middle of a telecommunications revolution and has the largest number of billionaires in all Asia. India's a hoppin' place, all right--indeed, and for better or worse, it mirrors America in a lot of ways.

In fact, if you go to India Palace in Hillcrest, you'll discover a couple signature traits of the domestic eateries: variety and abundance. The restaurant's menu features a stratospheric 124 consumables, with lamb and chicken the frontrunners. And these mildly spiced portions are begging to be shared. The tandoori chicken ($14), marinated in yogurt, spices and onions the size of soccer balls, includes five herkin' slices of breast and leg--each of you gets two pieces and can fight the other for the stray. The other dishes are just as sizable, and all are accompanied by a portion of basmati rice so large it has to come on its own platter. You're also invited (nay, urged) to wash it all down with a cup or two of chai tea ($3), which is a profoundly soothing drink under any circumstances (just don't let the FDA get word, or that's the end of that).

Betcha didn't know that India Palace is located at 694 University Ave. in a popular little strip mall. Betcha also didn't know that it's open seven days, featuring a lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and fine dining from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Betcha also didn't know that the phone number is 619-294-8886. Man, you've learned a lot today. If all that effort's made you hungry for Indian cuisine, you're about to head to the right place.
