When all you want to do is dance
I've recently come to the horrible realization that Coachella Withdrawal is a very real condition-one which, if left untreated, can lead to psychotic episodes of jealousy toward friends and other innocent bystanders who happen to express excitement about partying with the likes of Björk, Digitalism and MSTRKRFT. For those of us who thought missing just one year of Coachella would be OK, I've found a few parties to keep us from dwelling on the party we're not attending.
On April 25, you can head down to the Gaslamp for the weekly party known as Throb, which takes place every Wednesday at Red C Lounge (756 Fifth Ave.). Throb's resident DJs Coco, Jesse and Schugar will spin their electronic goodness. On May 2, Throb will take on a distinctly "machine funk"flavor as Get Ugly DJ Alex Villalobos throws it down.
On April 26, at my favorite mid-week "quirky house" party, Dos Tres, inside Modus (2202 Fourth Ave), shake your ass to two DJs known as A Touch of Class (ATOC). We can expect these NYC turntablists to spin several electro-pop gems from their most recent album, the humbly titled A Touch of Class Still Sucks! The remix album tackles the likes of Le Tigre, Scissor Sisters and The Gossip. LAMMB's Morgan Young will spin the opening set.
On April 28, trek it down to Tijuana for an event presented by the Borders Collapse collective at Tentaculo Bar (Plaza Pueblo Amigo). Two members of the Borders Collapse Soundsystem, DJ Jon Baker and El Poeta, will be spinning their particular blend of crunchy funk ("crunk”?) and IDM alongside Boards of Canada labelmate Jega and BrokenBeat's Tom Burbank, among many others. This night's list of DJs is overflowing with mad skills, making the $5 cover an inconsequential expense. Watch out for El Poeta's jedi mind tricks-his swirling eclectic mixes will make you lose your senses.
Who wants to sweat all weekend in the Indio desert anyway? Not me. (OK, maybe a little.)
