See, there's cool stuff to do in San Diego

Film

School daze

Film School Confidential, a showcase of movies made by student filmmakers in the San Diego and Tijuana region, takes its show to the Museum of Photographic Arts for its sixth incarnation. FCS doesn't accept submissions-instead, it's curated by KPBS film critic Beth Accomondo, who has hand-picked more than a dozen films made by filmmakers ranging from high-schoolers to grad students, including the world premiere of Cathy Alberich's Algesia. The curtain lifts at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15, followed by a meet-and-greet dessert buffet with the filmmakers. MOPA is located in Balboa Park. $6-$10. www.mopa.org.

Thought control: Not an artsy student-film fan? Anti-educationist rockers can hit up the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego screening of Pink Floyd The Wall at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12. Once you see the shaved nipple scene, you'll never forget it. This is by far the best bad-trip movie ever. The screening is happening at the museum's La Jolla location, 700 Prospect St. $7. 858-454-3541 or www.mcasd.org.

Music

These chicks rock

It's only a matter of time before Tenacious D makes a rock opera with The Iron Maidens. Maybe Jack Black will go undercover in drag for a chance to join the all-female tribute band, or maybe Black, Kyle Gass and the sexy she-rockers will all embark on a quest for Dave Murray's magical guitar. In any case, a collaboration between the two groups is movie magic just waiting to happen, so you'd better catch The Iron Maidens at a cozy local venue before they get too big for their britches. The bad-ass babes will be rockin' 'Canes (3105 Ocean Front Walk in Mission Beach) at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 858-488-1780, www.theironmaidens.com.

Art

Prince of paper

Origami might not be at the top of your list of the world's most thrilling activities, but then you've probably never seen any of physicist-turned-origami-master Robert Lang's insanely complicated paper sculptures. The man crafts spiders and lobsters, dinosaurs and dragons, airplanes and owls, all out of one piece of paper that he folds in mind-boggling ways. Don't miss the chance to witness Lang in live folding action at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Mingei International Museum, 155 West Grand Ave., in Escondido. $25-$35. 760-735-3355 or www.mingei.org.

Theater

Weathering the stormbr>

Enchanted April, a 1991 film about four disillusioned Brit ladies on holiday in Italy, featured some absolutely killer Italian vistas, an amenity we don't quite get with the stage version. That's OK, though. The women's utter joylessness surpasses any pleasure we might get from those panoramas. Disappointing marriages and tragic secrets color these ladies' lives, to the point that a trip abroad seems almost pointless. But even these gals can't resist Italy's great weather and historical legacies-an amazingly innocuous antidote in the face of some exceedingly difficult life circumstances. Enchanted April runs through May 13 at Lamb's Players Theatre, 1142 Orange Ave. in Coronado. $26-$50. 619-437-0600.

Special Events

Perro party

What's the most excitement your dog's had lately? A splash at Dog Beach? A rousing chase down the back alley with a frightened skunk? If so, maybe it's time you took the old beast to a real party. Woofstock: A Festival for Dogs & People begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 14, and includes a “Walk n' Roll” dog walk, best-trick and grooviest-costume contests, canine agility and fly-ball courses and more. All proceeds benefit the Canine Companions for Independence, so pack up the mutt and head to the corner of Park Boulevard and Presidents Way in Balboa Park-if you want to participate in the walk, get there an hour early and bring $35. 800-572-BARK, www.cci.org/woofstock2007. $5.

Free future: You drive past those weird little psychic shops all the time, but if you're like the majority of the increasingly cynical American population, you've never actually gone in. But admit it-you've always wondered what a reading would be like, so from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 13, stop wondering and take advantage of The Lightstone Academy of Psychic Arts' free Psychic Night at The OtherSide Coffee House, 4096 30th St. in North Park. Who knows what your future holds? The psychics do. www.lightstone academy.com or 619-269-0731.

Comedy

Mexicans are funny

People say comedian Paul Rodriguez is like Richard Pryor or George Carlin. The thing is, he isn't black and he isn't white-he's Mexican. And in today's political climate, what with people all freaked out over illegal immigration and stuff, it's hard for the man to joke about anything aside from the color of his skin. Ninety-nine percent of the time, Rodriquez's racially driven oh-my-god-did-he-just-say-that jokes are funny; the other 1 percent of the time you'll still be laughing 'cause the guy's wardrobe is funny-looking enough. See Rodriquez and other brown-skinned funny guys when The Crown Royal Latin Kings of Comedy tour rolls through San Diego at the Spreckels Theater, 121 Broadway, Downtown at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14. $40. 619-235-9500.

Fashion

For the dudes

OK, so Thread is mostly geared toward indie-minded ladies who like to buy one-of-a-kind, handmade garments, but this time around the Thread crew has made a conscious effort to stock the usually lacking men's department. That's right-Thread ain't just for chicks anymore, so from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15,, get the whole gang together and head to the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park for an entire day devoted to independent fashion and art. $7-$10. www.threadshow.com.

Food & Drink

No more beer

Are you tired of raging every Friday and Saturday night, only to wake up with a hangover and an empty bed? We singletons at CityBeat sure are, that's why we've been organizing nerdy little board-game nights on the weekends. We were gonna invite y'all, but then Lee Stanley came up with The Adult Game Lounge, a night of Taboo, chess, checkers, spades and many other stimulating games. So, BYOR (bring your own refreshments) and head over to The Arts and Entertainment Center, 3026 University Ave. in North Park, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, April 13. Who knows-if you kick ass at spades, you might just impress somebody and solve that pesky little empty-bed problem. 619-563-2384.
